F.A.Q

How do you catch diseases from showers?

Infections can be caught by either contact with the water or by
breathing in the contaminated water droplets. Pseaudomonas
typically can cause dermatitus or urinary tract infections while
legionella causes a form of pneumonia.

"But we clean our showers"

Even though your shower system may be regularly maintained ,
general cleaning is unlilkely to remove the source of nutrients on
which the legionella bacteria survives. This source is the hardy microscopic
biofilm of amoebae and other bacteria encouraged to form in pipework and shower heads by the warm conditions. This biofilm is resistant to conventional cleaning processes.

What is needed is a SPECIFIC process to address the problem of diseases in your water system. Shower-Safe is the most simple, successful and cost-effective method of doing this.

Who has responsibility for the water system at my place of work?

1. Employers 2. Site managers or Facilities managers with responsibilities for the control of premises.

As an individual you are responsible for your own health. Employers are required by law to minimise the risks in the work place to their employees and visitors to the site. Typically an Approved Code of Practice is issued by the Health & Safety Executive. in the case of legionnaires' disease this is known as L8.

What Government Publications are available concerning
Legionnaires' disease?

Legionnaires' disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water
systems.

This Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACoP L8) from the
Health and Safety Commission

specifies the precautions that need to be taken against Legionella bacteria in all water systems. If their recommendations are not followed then, in any subsequent court case, you would be requiredto prove your precautions were the equivalent or better.
